Obituary for Deacon James J. Conrad Jr.

James “Jim” J. Conrad, Jr. was called home to God’s Heavenly Kingdom on Veterans Day. He served in the Navy during the Korean War after graduating from St. Joseph’s High School in 1947.

Jim married Rose Marie Glica in May 1953 and they had three children named Jean, Jim and Jeff.

Jim worked as a USDA Government Meat Grader for 30 years and retired in Schuyler, Nebraska. He stayed active in the community and in his Catholic faith. He was awarded, along with his wife, the “Service To Mankind” award from the Schuyler Chamber Of Commerce.

Jim was ordained a Deacon on November 7, 1998, and served at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Schuyler and St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Omaha.

Jim loved sports, his favorite sport was baseball. He played in the CYO League in Omaha and had the honor to play against the Hall of Fame Pitcher Bob Gibson.

Jim enjoyed coaching baseball, as he coached many youth teams, teaching young kids to become well-rounded on and off the baseball diamond.

Jim was a man with a caring heart and a jovial smile. He positively impacted the many lives of whom he came in contact with. It didn’t matter if you were young or old, a human being or an animal, he still gave you his undivided attention.

Jim was known as the “Squirrel Man” at Ridgewood Heights Apartments for having squirrels come up to him as he fed them out of his hands. He was also known as the “Puzzle Man” for making 500 to 1,000 piece puzzles and getting them specially framed. He proudly donated over 100 of the puzzle pictures to family and friends as a memorable keepsake.

Jim is best known for being a loving husband to his wife, an inspirational father to his three children, a special Grandpa to his two Granddaughters Tiffany and Jessica, as well as a dog-gone good Grandpaw to his families three dogs...Rokki, Trixie and Kissie.

Jim loved his family and friends and always appreciated spending time with them. He spent the last five years at the Life Care Center Of Elkhorn and made many friends, from staff members to residents alike. He appreciated the love and support he received from his kids and Granddaughters who routinely visited him, as well as his niece Vikki.

James was preceded in death by his parents James J. Sr. and Madeline Conrad; his loving wife Rose Marie Conrad; brothers Joe and Robert Conrad and sister Mary Ann (Conrad) Bowman.

He is survived by his children Jean Conrad, Jim Conrad III and Jeff (Maria) Conrad; granddaughters Tiffany and Jessica Conrad and many more nieces, nephews and cousins.
