Genevieve Marie (Nelson) Herek, 83, of Omaha, Nebraska, entered into eternal rest on Saturday, December 27, 2025.
Gen was born on September 27, 1942, in Omaha to Raymond and Victoria Nelson. As the eldest of four daughters, she grew up with a nurturing spirit that defined her life. A devout wife and mother, Gen took immense pride in caring for her family, ensuring they always returned to home-cooked meals and were perfectly dressed for every occasion. She possessed a rare gift for making everyone in her life feel uniquely special.
Gen and her husband, Joe, shared a love for travel and family adventures. Their favorite destinations included the Oregon Coast, Colorado, and annual trips to Branson, Missouri. Together, they also explored Jamaica, Disney World, Disneyland, and the scenic beauty of Alaskan cruise. An avid scrapbooker, Gen leaves behind a cherished collection of memories into which she poured her heart and soul.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 64 years, Joseph Herek; children, Ray (Judy) Herek, Stephanee (Gary) Cannia, Scott Herek, Jill Nettell, and Emily (John) Blunck; sister, Kathleen Shaddy; and many nieces and nephews. Her legacy lives on through her eight grandchildren: Hailey Herek (Joe McGregor), Hilary (Mario) Rodriguez, Jesse (Katelyn) Nettell, Jacob (Megan) Cannia, Wyatt (Karryn) Nettell, Alex Cannia, and Gordon and Honora Blunck; and nine great-grandchildren.
Gen was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Victoria Nelson; her sisters, Maureen Hutchison and Pamela Nelson; and her son-in-law, Mark Nettell.
A Funeral Mass to honor and celebrate Genevieve's life will be held at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Papillion, Nebraska, on Tuesday, January 6th, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. Family and friends are invited to gather and pay their respects during the visitation at the church on Monday, January 5th, 2026, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., followed by a Vigil Service from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. There will be an additional visitation period on Tuesday, January 6th, 2026, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., preceding the Funeral Mass.
