Obituary for Marcella "Marci" R. Zadina

Mom was an extremely caring and loving wife, mother, grandma, and great grandma. She lived for her family and friends. She loved to bake for us! You could always find her making kolachies, rollicky, beignets, rosettes, cream puffs, and cookies; can’t forget the unbaked cookies! At Christmas time, she would make tons of different kinds of candies like divinity and caramels. She was an excellent cook too –a few of our favorites are the homemade chicken noodle soup, flat bones and dumplings, and cheesy potatoes. I can picture her now talking away as she cooked at our old home on 84th & Q. So many good memories in that kitchen; no one ever when hungry around Mom.

Mom was very talented and creative too. She decorated wedding, baptism, and birthday cakes and they were better than any bakery! Mom also did all kinds of floral decorations. Grandma and Grandpa Zadina owned a floral shop when we were younger, and Mom would arrange beautiful floral displays for them. She loved flowers at home too. The house was always surrounded with roses, peonies, gladiolas, and even yuccas that she transplanted from her mom’s house. She was sentimental about keeping Mamo’s yuccas alive. Mom was talented at sewing, quilting, and embroidering. If a grandbaby was on the way, you could find Mom in the basement lovingly piecing together a patchwork quilt and embroidering it to make it a special gift from her.

Mom loved to have fun and make memories. Growing up we were always getting together with family to play cards, to camp, or to share a laugh. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren always had sleepovers at her house where there were of course tons of homemade treats, quilt forts, toys, and animal pancakes for breakfast. Babies held a special place in Mom’s heart. She loved, loved, loved holding babies. Mom had a special ‘power’ rocking chair action that would calm or put any baby to sleep.

She was always busy doing something for someone. She volunteered at St. Gerald’s since it opened in Ralston. Mom would volunteer to bake, clean, count, do prayer chains, an adoration, or whatever was needed. She was hard working and someone you could always count on. If you called, Mom would be there.

Mom passed away Friday, September 11, 2020 in La Vista, Nebraska at the age of 86 years. She was surrounded by her family and left this world very peacefully. I am sure Jesus greeted her with a big hug and thanked her for her love and a life well lived.

Mom is preceded in death by her dearly loved parents Josef and Agnes Vanek; brothers Bill and Al Vanek; sister Glady Sokolik; and great-granddaughter Paisley.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Jerry Zadina whom she loved more than anything; children Jerry (Carol) Zadina, Vicki (Jim) Benes, Laura (George) Thomas, Steve (Brenda) Zadina; sister Vicky Arrigo; grandchildren Jerry (Emily) Zadina, Emily (Matt) Hutsell, Mindy Sohl, John Benes, Katie Thomas, Ellie Thomas, Allison (Scott) Ledwich, Caitlin Zadina, and Darby (Bobby) Petersen; and great-grandchildren Caden, Alivia, Kylie, Bennett, Gabe, Connor, Tyler, Logan, Addison, Addilyn, and Cayson; and many nieces, nephews, and other family.
