Obituary for Nancy K Smith

Nancy K. Smith was called home on the morning of Wednesday, July 31, 2019, with her loving husband Don by her side and holding her hand, at the age of 76 years.

Nancy was preceded in death by her parents Roy and Evelyn Kapple; all of her brothers Richard, Terry and James Kapple; her infant son Douglas; Niece TerryLynn and Nephew Tony.
She is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 57 years, Don; daughter Sheila (Robert) Brazda; sons Dan and Ron (Linda) Smith; grandchildren Justin (Laura) Smith, Heather (Brett) Kaiser and Stephanie Brazda; great-grandson Brigham Kaiser; many nieces, nephews, sister and brother in laws; and her well known best 4-legged friend, her dog Happy.

Nancy was born in Clarinda Iowa, the only daughter of four children. She always had many fond memories of farm life in Iowa in Clarinda and Red Oak. Work brought her father to Omaha where she met Don in high school.

Her and Don met in the cafeteria at school. They were married October 22, 1961 in Omaha soon after graduation. July 1962 they suffered the loss of their first child Douglas at birth. But were then blessed with three more children.

Nancy would always say when asked how she was, I’m fat and sassy! She had unlimited talent from cooking, baking and decorating cakes, wedding cakes, designing flowers. There wasn’t anything she couldn’t do. On their 5 acre home in Sarpy County, she had a huge garden for many years, beautiful flowers, blue bird houses surrounding the perimeter. She enjoyed watching birds and specifically the hummingbirds from her kitchen table and the amazing waterfall Don built in their backyard. It was truly a place of beauty. Her and Don took great pride in what they had built over the years. They provided a great opportunity for their kids to enjoy 4-H, raising pigs, sheep, cattle, chickens, bunnies. Nancy would bring in sick animals right in front of their fire place when it was cold and nurse them back to health. It was not uncommon to have a baby calf in their front entry way, chickens kept warm by the fire place and puppies born in the garage.

Nancy blessed many nieces, nephews, friends with beautiful and delicious wedding cakes. In her last days when they were able to visit, many of them thanked her for their amazing wedding cakes. They never forgot what she did for them.

Nancy owned Forever Yours Floral on Main Street in Springfield bringing joy to all who entered her shop. She was the talk of the town. She was active in the Nebraska Florist Society and earned Nebraska Master Florist – Nancy Smith, NFD, NMF. She was very proud of all her floral designs and was awarded many trophies lining their fireplace from competitions.

Over the years, Nancy was active in her church in UMW and Senior Meals. She was the Sunday School Superintendent and her and Don were the Youth Group Leaders taking the youth group on many trips and always opened their home to any of the youth that wanted to come. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout Leader, 4-H Leader, room mother for all the kid’s school parties.

Nancy was an amazing daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, friend. She was well loved in her family, church and community. She is greatly missed by so many.
