Margaret Mary (Lubischer) Hemenway, age 88, of Gretna, Nebraska, passed away on May 11 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, surrounded by her family.
Born on June 3, 1937, in Orleans, Nebraska, Margaret was the daughter of David and Ruby Lubischer. She grew up in South Omaha and graduated from South High School in 1955. She later married Jim Hemenway at St. Mary’s Church in 1957. Jim and Margaret welcomed their first child in 1958, and six more followed in quick succession.
Margaret attended accounting courses with Jim at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Together, they worked hard to provide for their growing household. She was versatile and resourceful, working for a wide range of employers, including WOW Radio, Packers National Bank, Standard Chemical, Fischer Inc. in Dubuque, Iowa, and Lennox Heating and Cooling in Sioux City, Iowa. She even drove a special needs bus in Campbell, Nebraska. She retired after a long and productive career from First National Bank of Omaha. Throughout her life, she was known for her kindness and patience.
Margaret dedicated her life to her family. She found joy in sewing, baking, and sharing her husband’s passion for sports. She had a special gift for making people feel welcome in her home—everyone who entered was accepted as part of the family, with no judgment, only love. Those who knew her will remember her for her warm smile, her thoughtfulness, and her attention to the little things that kept a family connected and a household running through both good times and difficult ones. She was a devoted daughter, a supportive sister, a loving wife and mother, and a faithful child of God.
She is survived by her siblings Rita Harris, Ann Clark (Gary), Marilyn Smythe (Johnnie), and Richard (Diane); her children James (Debra), Thomas (Taschiana), Mary Reiva (Brad), Ronald, Gerald (Mary), and Martin; as well as 25 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, James; her son, William Mark; and her brothers, John and Dave.
Margaret will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew her.
Memorial Donations may be directed to St. Bernadette Catholic Church.
