Georgia V. Lewis, 83 of Omaha, NE, passed away October 28, 2025. She was surrounded by her loving family. Georgia was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, parents, George and Vera Halac, and daughter Debra Zurek. Georgia is survived by her daughters Suzie, Teri and Kathi and grandson Vince.
Georgia was born on May 3, 1942. She was baptized at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church where she also attended first through third grade. She made her First Holy Communion at St. Brigdet’s and Confirmation at Holy Ghost Catholic Church. Georgia graduated from Holy Ghost Catholic Church in 1956 and then attended high school at South High where she was an honor roll student. She took nursing aide classes at University Hospital in the summer and during her senior year she worked as a nurse’s aide at a nursing home. This desire to become a nurse started in third grade where she enjoyed working with the elderly. She eventually started nurse training at St. Joseph Hospital and was recommended to attend Practical Nursing School where she graduated in April 1962 and passed the state boards.
Georgia worked as an LPN at St. Joseph Hospital from 1962 to 1973. She was a stay-at-home mother until 1980 where she then began nursing duties at Lutheran Hospital for 6 years and then eventually was employed at Omaha Nursing Home. She returned to school to obtain her RN degree and graduated from College of St. Mary in 1992 with an Associate’s Degree in Nursing. She started working at St. Joseph Hospital (Creighton University Medical Center) in July 1992, where she eventually retired from.
Georgia met Robert Lewis in the fall of 1964 while bowling on a bowling league at the Music Box on 24th and Harney St. in Omaha. They were married at Holy Ghost Catholic Church on April 16, 1966. Georgia gave birth to four beautiful daughters: Debra, on January 17, 1967; Suzanne, on November 2, 1969; Teri, on June 15, 1973; and Kathryn, on July 30, 1981.
Debra graduated in 1983 from South High School and married Gary Zurek on October 23, 1991. They had two daughters, Ashley (born December 19, 1993) and Sierra (born February 1, 1999) and moved to Tennessee, where Debra passed away on August 20, 2021.
Suzanne (Suzie) attended first grade at St. Stanislaus Catholic School but transferred to Robbins Elementary School for second to sixth grade. She attended Norris Jr. High and South High School. She met Robert Bessey and she gave birth to Robert and Georgia’s grandchildren: Melissa (December 13, 1990), Kimberly (March 15, 1993), Robert (June 5, 1994), Brittany (January 27, 1997), Brandon and Bryan (December 15, 1995) and Shayna (June 20, 2005).
Teri graduated South High School in 1992 and became a cosmetologist after graduating at Capital Beauty School and now works for the Postal Service. She gave birth to a son, Aiden Cady, on October 19, 1995. She married Branden Bowlby on November 19, 2007, after meeting at a bowling alley.
Kathryn (Kathi) graduated Omah North High School in May 1999 and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Marketing. She currently works as a disability claims associate. Kathi married Chris Oliver on September 22, 2012.
Vincent (Vince) Lewis was born September 19, 1986 to Debra. Georgia selfishly and lovingly became Vince’s legal guardian and conservator throughout his childhood and adult life. He attended South High School, where he graduated from, and currently works at Creighton University Dining Hall.
Georgia enjoyed bowling at a young age. As she grew older, she enjoyed listening to Elvis Presley’s music, collected owl decorations and trinkets and enjoyed watching tv shows like Scooby-Doo, Columbo, Murder, She Wrote and holiday Hallmark movies. She enjoyed baking, especially around the holidays, and taught her daughter Kathi how to make the ‘legendary’ potato dumplings (served with sauerkraut and pork featherbones).
