Gail Laurene Koenig passed away on February 15th, 2026, at Hospice House-The Josie Harper Residence.
Gail was born on August 9th, 1945, in Tilden NE. to George and Edith Grant. She grew up with her sister Georgia on a farm south of Meadow Grove and graduated from Meadow Grove High School in May of 1963.
Gail's care and compassion for others developed at an early age as she stood on a stool next to her bedridden grandmother and brushed her hair. This desire to help others blossomed into a love of nursing and led her to enroll in the Bishop Clarkson Memorial School of Nursing, graduating in August of 1966.
Gail was a talented nurse throughout her 51 years of caring for others. She started as a surgical and then night supervisory nurse, transitioned to being a school nurse as she raised her children, and finished with a long and fulfilling position as a private duty pediatric nurse. Two weeks before her passing, the Nebraska Nurse Honor Guard blessed us by conducting a beautiful ceremony honoring Gail's wonderful nursing career.
Gail married the love of her life, Larry Koenig, on September 10th, 1966. After living in Pierce and McCook, they moved to their forever home in Ralston, NE, in 1976. She cherished her time with Larry, raising their two children Kory and Kristi while making a wonderful home. Being a grandmother to four wonderful grandchildren was one of her absolute favorite things in life. Gail loved her garden, enjoyed cooking, and adored going on trips with her hubby, where they never missed an opportunity to go on long walks while holding hands.
Gail's love of God began as a member of the United Methodist Church in Meadow Grove. She had special memories of singing "Jesus loves me, this I know" as a little girl. Her faith deepened as she became a member of St. Gerald Catholic Church in Ralston. Gail loved being a church greeter, helping with funeral lunches, and being a member of the grief ministry.
She was a kind and gentle soul, full of endless amounts of care and compassion for others. She will be greatly missed, fondly remembered, and will forever live in our hearts and thoughts.
The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the staff at Hospice House-The Josie Harper Residence, for the wonderful and loving care that Gail received in her final weeks.
Gail was preceded in death by father George Grant; mother Edith Grant; grandfather Lee Grant; grandmother Sadie Grant; grandfather William Martin.
She is survived by husband Larry Koenig; children Kory (Roxanne) Koenig, Kristi (George Schlothauer) Brewer; grandchildren Matthew Koenig, Cat Koenig, Braxton Brewer, Bryson Brewer; sister Georgia (Darrell) Wyatt; brother-in-law Lyle (Carol) Koenig, sister-in-law Mavonne (Don) Prokop, brother-in-law Loren Koenig; and many other nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Memorial donations will be directed by the family to Gail's chosen charities.
