Dorothy Ann Bos
Dorothy Ann (Dytrych) Bos left this earthly world to join her heavenly family on May 13, 2025 at the age of 96. Dorothy was born on March 25, 1929, to James and Sylvia Dytrych in Clarkson, Nebraska. She lived on her parent’s farm with her brother, Stanley. Dorothy taught at a country school before marrying Robert Thomas Bos on August 9, 1949. They began their married life together on a farm without electricity or indoor plumbing.
After eight years of hard work on the farm, they decided to move to Omaha. Dorothy stayed home to raise their seven children. As the children became more independent, she worked on Sunday at a small neighborhood grocery store, then as a cook at Bryan Senior High School and finally at Skarda Equipment Company.
Bob and Dorothy finally had time to pursue their love for dancing. They went to Peony Park for popular music on Tuesday, downtown Omaha to the Music Box on Thursday and attended dances at Sokol for Czech music on Sunday.
Dorothy had many passions. She enjoyed working with her flowers, especially her favorite, iris. Dorothy learned how to quilt, knit and crochet from her mother and loved nothing more than to plan, cut, and sew her next quilt. These she happily shared with her family, friends and Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church for their fundraisers.
Her parents nurtured in her pride of her Czech heritage. She was able to travel to the Czech Republic twice to visit relatives and help in her genealogy research which she made copies of for each of her children. Of course, pork with dumplings and sauerkraut, kolache, rollicky, and strudel were always shared at her family gatherings.
Dorothy had a sense of adventure and loved to have fun. She didn’t hesitate to go up in a hot air balloon, jump on the back of a motorcycle, or travel the world. She always had time to visit with a neighbor, lend a helping hand or share her recent baking or a divided perennial. She loved her family and the people she met.
During COVID, Dorothy spent time reflecting on her life and published her story in a book called, “Perseverance and Resilience” which she made copies of and shared with her children. This looking back through the years brought out how important her strong Catholic faith was in her life with a special devotion to Blessed Mother Mary and the values that were instilled in her from her parents.
After Bob’s passing in 2002, Dorothy remained in their home and lived independently until the age of 95. Dorothy would not have been able to stay in the comfort of her own home without the compassionate care from her in-home caregiver, Tonja Bunner. At the end of Dorothy’s life, she was able to reside in a memory care facility for about seven months. She made an impact in the lives of the residents and staff with her friendly manner, humming and willingness to try new things.
It’s possible, God wanted a role model on Earth and so he made people like Dorothy. She was strength, generosity, kindness and patience personified.
Dorothy was predeceased by husband, Robert Bos, son, Loren Bos, grandson, Aaron Bos, and infant great grandsons Andrew Bos and Becken Holthus, parents, James and Sylvia (Kabes) Dytrych, and brother, Stanley Dytrych.
Survivors include her children Gail (Wallace) Troyer of St. Edwards, NE, Denise (Larry) Fletcher of Toledo, IA, Renee (Ray) Marshall of Frisco, TX, Galen (Terri) Bos of Gretna, NE, Alyson Gunia of Omaha, NE and Alan (Gail) Bos of Omaha, NE along with 19 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
